Watch Kangana Ranaut’s second directorial Movie political drama ‘Emergency’ released on Netflix on Holi

The Bollywood movie Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut, has made a surprise debut on Netflix just in time for Holi, offering fans an early treat. The film, in which Kangana portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has now been made available for streaming on the platform. The actress took to social media to announce its digital release, stating in an Instagram story that audiences can now watch her second directorial project after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi exclusively on Netflix. The film, initially set for its OTT release on March 17, was rescheduled, allowing viewers to start streaming it from March 14 instead. Confirming the update, Netflix shared a post on X, inviting audiences to watch the gripping story unfold.
Produced under the banners of Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, Emergency is set during the controversial period of India’s 1975 Emergency, capturing the turbulence of that era. The film was released theatrically on January 17 but faced several challenges, including protests and censorship issues, leading to a lackluster box office performance.
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik, the political drama unfolds over a runtime of 146 minutes. The film, reportedly made on a budget of ₹60 crore, aims to chronicle one of India’s most politically charged historical events. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh reviewed Emergency on X, awarding it 3.5 stars and praising Kangana’s portrayal, calling her performance fantastic. He noted that while the film successfully captures significant historical moments, its documentary-style approach and some rushed sequences slightly reduce its overall impact.
Originally, the film was planned for a September 6, 2024 release but faced delays due to pending approval from the Central Board of Film Certification. After undergoing mandatory edits and modifications, Emergency was granted a U/A certificate, eventually hitting theaters earlier this year. Now, with its arrival on Netflix, the film finds a new platform to reach audiences beyond its theatrical run.
