Air India has unveiled plans to establish a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru, aiming to develop a robust aviation ecosystem equipped for the future. This initiative addresses the growing demand for skilled maintenance engineers as Air India continues to expand its fleet, ensuring it meets evolving industry standards. The BMTO will offer a comprehensive 2+2-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) programme certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), setting a high benchmark for aviation education in India.
As per reports from PTI, Air India has partnered with Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited, to construct a state-of-the-art facility spanning 86,000 square feet in Bengaluru Airport City. This upcoming campus will feature cutting-edge classrooms, advanced laboratories, and access to highly experienced trainers, offering students a world-class learning environment. The facility is expected to become operational by mid-2026, marking a significant step in the airline’s vision for sustainable growth.
Until the dedicated BMTO campus is ready, Air India plans to roll out a Cadet AME programme in collaboration with well-regarded institutions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. This temporary arrangement will ensure the seamless continuation of AME training, supporting the airline’s immediate workforce development goals while laying the foundation for long-term capacity building.
The BMTO is crucial in developing a pool of engineers who are qualified to fulfill the unique needs of the airline, according to Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of Air India’s Aviation Academy. The academy’s strategic location near Kempegowda International Airport will provide cadets with invaluable real-world exposure, preparing them comprehensively for the technical challenges of aircraft maintenance.
Beyond technical training, the programme will offer specialised career trajectories for graduates, enabling them to pursue bachelor’s degrees through partnerships with universities. This integration of academic and vocational pathways aims to broaden students’ horizons and boost their professional prospects.
Air India’s initiative underscores its commitment to fostering a self-reliant workforce while driving its transformation into a global aviation leader. By prioritising skill development and innovation, the airline is ensuring its readiness for the dynamic challenges of the aviation industry.
