The present Doodle observes Cambodia’s Independence Day, a yearly celebration of the date in 1953 when the country proclaimed its freedom from French pilgrim rule.

Portrayed in the Doodle fine art is the blue-and-red, evenly striped Cambodian banner, which features the primary structure of the country’s old Angkor Wat sanctuary complex. When the capital of Cambodia’s antiquated Khmer realm, Angkor Wat–which means “temple city”– is a striking accomplishment of design discovered only miles outside the city of Siem Reap. The sanctuary is only one of the memorable structures arranged in the about 400-square-kilometer Angkor Archeological Park, which is recorded on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and generally proclaimed as one of Southeast Asia’s most prized locales.

Upbeat Independence Day, Cambodia!
