There is a new layout for the “All” apps view of the Windows 11 Start menu that resembles Apple’s iPhone’s Start menu

Windows 11 is set to receive a redesigned Start menu layout in versions 24H2 and 23H3, bringing a fresh way to organize apps and games under the “All” apps section. This update introduces two new display options: a Name-based Grid view and a Category-based arrangement, making it easier to navigate and manage installed applications.

While this isn’t a drastic overhaul of Windows 11’s signature Start menu, the changes could appeal to users who favor a structured layout similar to live tiles or the categorized app view seen on iOS. Windows Latest originally reported on the redesigned Start menu in 2024 and recently provided hands-on insights from a leaked version. Now, Microsoft has officially confirmed the upgrade in a recent blog post.

The update is set to roll out to Windows 11 23H2 users in the coming weeks. However, those eager to try it out can access the new layout today by enrolling in the Beta Channel. Although not explicitly mentioned in Microsoft’s announcement, reports indicate that Windows 11 24H2 will also receive this enhanced Start menu.

So, what’s different about this new Start menu?

The updated “All” apps page now includes a Name Grid layout, which organizes apps alphabetically while displaying their icons as tiles. For instance, applications like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects will all appear under the letter A.

The second option is the “Category” view, which groups apps according to their function. This layout features larger icons and a cleaner appearance, resembling a hybrid of Windows’ previous live tiles and iOS-style app organization. However, Microsoft has not yet included an option for users to create custom categories. Instead, the company appears to be using an AI-based method to classify apps automatically.

Currently, the Start menu presents apps in a long alphabetical list on the left side, where each entry includes an icon and its name. The new update replaces this with a more structured grid or categorized format, improving accessibility and ease of use.

Although Microsoft has yet to announce a definitive release date for the feature, it is currently undergoing testing in the Beta Channel. Based on insights from Windows Latest, the new Start menu could be widely available for Windows 11 23H2 and 24H2 within the next two months.

Beyond this Start menu refresh, additional updates are expected for 2025. A previously tested sidebar feature may soon allow users to check notifications, messages, and recently opened Android apps directly from the Start menu. Additionally, the Start menu is set to support file transfers to Android devices through Microsoft’s Phone Link integration, enhancing cross-device functionality.
