PM Modi believes hosting the Olympics in 2036 will bring Indian sports to new heights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (January 28, 2025) reaffirmed his government’s commitment to securing the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, emphasizing that the move would elevate Indian sports to unprecedented heights while fostering growth across multiple sectors.
Speaking as the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games, the Prime Minister highlighted that a successful Olympic bid would be transformative for India’s infrastructure. “We are working tirelessly to host the 2036 Olympics in India. This will not only revolutionize Indian sports but also bring massive development across various fields,” he stated.
He elaborated on the wider impact of hosting an event of such magnitude, noting that the Olympics extend beyond sports. “Wherever the Olympics are held, every sector experiences growth. It leads to better facilities for athletes, advancements in infrastructure, improved connectivity, transport, and a major boost in tourism,” he explained. “Athletes and spectators from all over the world will travel to India, opening new avenues for economic progress.”
India had formally expressed its desire to host the 2036 Olympics during the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Session in Mumbai in 2023. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has already submitted its letter of intent, though the final decision from the IOC is expected in 2026. The next step for India is to draft a comprehensive bid, detailing its strategic vision for the Games. However, strong competition is expected from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, making it a challenging endeavor.
Addressing the athletes present at the event, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s unwavering support for sports and its role in national development. “We are committed to strengthening your capabilities. Sports is a crucial factor in a country’s progress,” he said. He also underscored the economic potential of sports, highlighting the importance of professionals such as coaches, trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and sports equipment manufacturers in boosting India’s sporting economy.
Speaking about the significance of the National Games, he described them as more than just a sports competition. “The motto ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,’ which celebrates the variety and unity of our nation, is embodied by these Games. Our aim is to provide our athletes with the best opportunities to help them realize their full potential,” he said.
The Prime Minister also touched on various government initiatives aimed at supporting Indian athletes, including the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and the Khelo India program. “Our sports budget has tripled, and we have invested significant resources through TOPS to benefit our athletes. Khelo India Youth Games and University Games have given young athletes a platform to excel. The Khelo India Para Games have also helped para-athletes achieve remarkable success,” he added.
Concluding his speech, he shared a few fitness recommendations with the youth, encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyles. “Reduce your oil intake by 10% and make walking and exercise a part of your daily routine. We must tackle the rising issue of obesity,” he advised.
