The first-ever Mazda CX-80 has been introduced by Mazda New Zealand and is scheduled to go on sale in November 2024.

Aimed squarely at the premium SUV sector, the CX-80 will sit between the smaller CX-60 and the larger CX-90, delivering the same mix of luxury, performance, and utility.

Family design

The CX-80 is a beautiful example of Mazda’s “Graceful Toughness” design concept, combining toughness with elegance. The car has a refined appearance, and its sturdy SUV posture suggests that it is a capable machine.

A choice of two hybrids

The CX-80 will be available in New Zealand with two different powertrain options: a 3.3-liter six-cylinder petrol hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

The PHEV produces 241kW and 500Nm of torque when its powerful 129kW electric motor, 17.8kWh battery, and 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine are all combined. It is well-suited for daily errands and commutes, with an estimated range of 60 km on electricity alone.

With Mazda’s M Hybrid Boost 48V mild hybrid system, the 3.3-liter, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol hybrid produces 450Nm of torque and 209kW of power. Its inline-six engine layout offers smooth running and a refined engine tone.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox and Mazda’s i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system are matched with both powertrains to provide dependable performance in a range of driving circumstances. Practicality is also not compromised by the CX-80, which has a 2500 kg braked towing capability for both powerplant options.

There are two grades in the model lineup: SP and Homura.

With its leather seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, and LED headlights, the SP grade has a sporty appearance. The Homura grade, which is limited to the PHEV option, ups the luxury factor with features like a Bose audio system, heated rear seats, an adaptive LED lamp system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Seating for up to seven

The inside of the CX-80 is made to fit up to seven people. The third-row seats can fit people up to 1700mm height, while the second-row seats have a wide reclining angle and a sliding range of 120mm.

A large door opening, a one-touch walk-in feature for the second row, and a level step floor make it easier to reach the third row.

Imminent launch

The SUV market in New Zealand is about to be affected by the arrival of the new Mazda CX-80. It is expected to appeal to consumers looking for a flexible, high-end family car because of its unique combination of elegant styling, cutting-edge technology, and useful amenities.

As November approaches, complete information on pricing and specifications will be released, increasing interest in the soon-to-come hybrid SUV.
