Vicky Kaushal is gearing up to portray Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the much-anticipated historical epic, Chhaava. This grand period drama delves into the life of the fierce Maratha warrior as he ascends the throne following the passing of his father, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and takes on the formidable Mughal Empire.

Calling it his most demanding role to date, Vicky Kaushal is fully immersed in promotions for the film. At a recent event, he spoke with great passion about the significance of Chhaava, emphasizing the importance of bringing Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to a larger audience. “It is an honor for me to play Chhatrapati Maharaj,” he shared, expressing gratitude to director Laxman Utekar and producer Dinesh Vijan for trusting him with the role. He further emphasized that while the people of Maharashtra are well-versed in the Maratha legacy, it is essential for every household across the nation—and even globally—to learn about these great warriors.

During an interview with Radio Nasha, Vicky revealed that his preparation for Chhaava was the most physically demanding challenge of his career. Under Laxman Utekar’s direction, authenticity was a top priority, which meant no shortcuts or CGI enhancements. Vicky underwent seven months of grueling training, gaining 25 kg of muscle while mastering horse riding and sword fighting before filming even began. “Laxman sir was firm—until I looked, moved, and fought like a true warrior, we wouldn’t start shooting,” he recalled. He also grew his hair and beard to enhance his transformation, ensuring that every aspect of his portrayal was as real as possible.

The battle sequences in Chhaava promise to be a visual spectacle, filmed with real warriors rather than digital effects. “If a scene has 2,000 warriors, there were actually 2,000 people on set,” Vicky explained, adding that 500 of the country’s top stunt performers were involved in staging raw, intense combat scenes. The energy on set, he described, was electrifying.

Beyond Vicky’s transformation, Chhaava features a stellar supporting cast. Akshaye Khanna steps into the role of the powerful Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, delivering a performance that Vicky found deeply unsettling. “When I first saw his look in pictures, I was amazed, but witnessing him in full costume, embodying Aurangzeb, was chilling. His body language, his aura—he was terrifying,” Vicky remarked. Meanwhile, Rashmika Mandanna brings depth to the story as Maharani Yesubai, the wife of Sambhaji Maharaj, adding emotional resonance to the narrative.

With its intense performances, grand battle sequences, and compelling storytelling, Chhaava is shaping up to be a cinematic spectacle. Scheduled for release on February 14, the film is poised to deliver a powerful tribute to one of India’s greatest warriors, and fans eagerly await Vicky Kaushal’s most transformative performance yet.
