Jerry Rice’s Record for most Career Super Bowl Catches is Surpassed by Travis Kelce

Kelce caught his third reception of the game in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 59. He now holds the record for most catches in Super Bowl history, surpassing NFL great Jerry Rice. On Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelce set the record by two catches, and he needed three more to surpass Rice’s record of 33 catches in Super Bowls.
During his 20-year career, Rice appeared in four Super Bowls and caught 31 passes. Kelce has broken several Rice records before. In the AFC Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, he surpassed Rice’s eight-yard total with his tenth 100-yard performance.
Late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ crushing defeat at the hands of the Eagles at the Caesars Superdome, Kelce formally broke Rice’s record. On their penultimate drive, he got two catches that resulted in a late touchdown but weren’t enough to keep them in the game. The Chiefs’ aspirations of a record three-peat were dashed as the Eagles swept to a 40–22 victory.
With 589 yards, Rice continues to retain the career Super Bowl receiving yardage record, which could remain in place for some time. No one else was within 225 yards of that mark before to Sunday. However, he broke one of his most significant records.
At the completion of his age-35 season, it should come as no surprise that he is at least thinking about retiring. Seldom do tight ends in the NFL survive that long, much less continue to produce as Kelce has. In the week before the Super Bowl, Kelce stated that he thinks he still has a lot of good football left, but he also has a number of career options, such as a very popular podcast with his brother Jason, who left the NFL after the previous season.
The Chiefs’ success and tenacity throughout the 2024 season remain unaffected by the defeat. Despite battling injuries and an inconsistent offence, they ended the regular season 15-2. They went on to defeat the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans in the AFC bracket, continuing their clutch performances.
Few non-quarterbacks ever achieve the level of renown that Travis Kelce has, including Super Bowl rings and several awards. He set a significant record after this fifth Super Bowl that may be difficult to surpass.
