IPL 2025: Major Rule Changes, Venues And Captains and More Details

The excitement is still unrivaled eighteen years after the Indian Premier League (IPL) transformed Indian cricket. Every season has new twists, new jerseys, new rules, and new captains, but the T20 format remains constant.
The season begins on March 22 when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru play the Kolkata Knight Riders.
IPL2025: Teams Will Be Led by New Captains
With five teams selecting new captains, a significant captaincy change sets the tone for the 2025 Indian Premier League. Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to the 2024 championship, is now in command of Punjab Kings, while Ajinkya Rahane is the new captain of KKR.
While RCB made a daring decision by selecting Rajat Patidar, who has not yet played a Twenty20 International for India, as their new captain, DC has trusted Axar Patel with the leadership role.
How Many Cities will Host the IPL Matches?
The 2025 Indian Premier League will have 74 games in 13 cities. Home games for each of the ten clubs will be held in their respective cities. Additionally, the second home field will host some of the games for three teams. Punjab Kings will host their home games at Dharamsala, while Delhi Capitals will host a few in Visakhapatnam. Guwahati, the home field of the Rajasthan Royals’ new stand-in captain Riyan Parag, will host the team’s second home game of the season.
Is There any Change in Format?
No, two virtual groupings have been formed from the ten teams.
Group A: CSK, KKR, RR, RCB and PBKS
Group B: MI, SRH, GT, DC and LSG
Every team will have two games against the other teams in their group. Additionally, depending on seeding, they will face one team from the opposing group twice and the other four teams once. Every side will have the opportunity to play seven home games and seven away games.
When will the Matches Start?
“Conditional” Second New Ball In Second Innings: If dew is a major factor in an evening match, a “conditional” second new ball will be introduced in the eleventh over; however, this will not be the case in afternoon games.
DRS For Wides: While leg-side wides are still up to the umpire’s judgment, DRS will now cover height and off-side wides for the first time.
IPL 2025 Establishes Time Limits for Super Overs: Super Overs in the IPL 2025 will go on until a winner is determined within an allotted hour. The first one begins within ten minutes, and the others after five. Penalties roll over, and each team receives one unsuccessful DRS every Super Over.
If another Super Over is required, the batting order is switched, with fresh bowlers and hitters each time. Unless otherwise noted, the same ball is used again, and fielding limits correspond to the last over. The match is a tie if it is not completed.
Despite complaints that it hinders the development of all-round players, the Impact Player rule will remain in place for another season.
