Gujarat-based Tata Electronics will manufacture display semiconductor chips

Tata Electronics is set to establish a display chip manufacturing facility in Gujarat through a strategic partnership with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and Himax Technologies. This significant collaboration was confirmed by Tata Electronics CEO Randhir Thakur during his address at the IESA Vision Summit, where he announced the signing of an agreement with the Gujarat government to bring the project to life.
Thakur expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am pleased to announce the signing of an MoU between Tata Electronics, PSMC, and Himax, marking a transformative step in India’s display technology landscape. Leveraging PSMC’s advanced technology, Tata Electronics will produce display chips for Himax at its upcoming facility in Dholera, Gujarat.”
Display chips play a crucial role in modern electronics, powering devices such as televisions, smartphone screens, camera image sensors, LEDs, and OLEDs. The move by Tata Electronics comes amid plans by the Vedanta Group, which has also proposed setting up a display fabrication unit in Gujarat, although their project is still awaiting government approval.
With this initiative, Tata Electronics will now have a footprint across all three major semiconductor manufacturing segments, reinforcing its presence in India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem. The project will combine the expertise of Tata Electronics, Himax, and PSMC, ensuring a full-spectrum approach to display semiconductor solutions, encompassing chip design, production, packaging, and electronic manufacturing services (EMS) for both domestic and international markets.
Himax Technologies Co-Founder and CEO Jordan Wu emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Through this collaboration, we aim to integrate Himax’s cutting-edge display semiconductor technology and WiseEye ultralow power AI sensing to support India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative while strengthening global supply chain resilience. This venture reaffirms our dedication to providing state-of-the-art display solutions to meet the evolving demands of consumers worldwide.”
Additionally, Tata Electronics is advancing its semiconductor ambitions with a separate project—a semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat, being developed with a substantial investment of approximately ₹91,000 crore, with PSMC serving as the technology partner.
PSMC, ranked as the world’s seventh-largest pure-play foundry, operates multiple semiconductor fabrication plants in Taiwan, including four 12-inch and two 8-inch fabs, collectively capable of producing over 2.1 million 12-inch equivalent wafers annually. In parallel, Tata is also investing ₹27,000 crore to establish a chip assembly and testing facility in Assam, further cementing its role as a major player in India’s semiconductor and electronics industry.
