Android Authority explained that Google Maps is the first app to use the new Live Updates feature in Android 16. On the Android 16 beta 2.1 status bar, users may now display the time till their next turn and the expected time of arrival.

Feature

In its initial Android 16 beta release, Google unveiled the Live Updates feature, characterizing it as a “new class of notifications that help users monitor and quickly access important ongoing activities.” Though we haven’t seen much of how it appears in actual Android apps up to this point, the functionality is comparable to Live Activities on iOS, which displays real-time notifications on the lock screen and the Dynamic Island.

Additionally, there is a new feature in the Google Maps app that lets you disable “live info,” which will show up on the lockscreen and status bar, as demonstrated by Android Authority. Google Maps notifications are still “collapsed” on the always-on display, explains Android Authority, meaning that live updates are still only partially supported in Android 16 beta 2.1.

With this chip, you will be able to see the ETA, the time till the next turn, and maybe other turn-by-turn information. Due to their placement in the status bar, these chips are too small to hold a lot of data. By tapping on one of the chips, you may transform it into a panel that displays the same data without requiring you to scroll down from the top of the screen.

The information displayed on the panel includes the expected time of arrival till the next turn, the distance to your destination, the time until the next turn, and the distance you must go to reach it. My Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 Beta 2.1 has the feature. In addition to integrating with Google Maps, Live Updates will display the status of food deliveries from specific delivery services, the distance of the ride-share you requested from Uber or Lyft, the countdown timer’s progress, and the most recent results from specific athletic events.
