According to reports, Google has started to expand the use of Gemini Extensions for WhatsApp, Phone, and Messages. These extensions for the Android Gemini assistant, which were first released in October, let users ask the AI to make calls, send messages, and perform other tasks without having to use the corresponding apps.
Google explained that Gemini can make direct calls to contacts, companies, and phone numbers via the device’s calling app when the Phone extension is enabled. Likewise, Gemini may use the built-in messaging software to send messages, create drafts, and help with editing by using the Messages extension.
Users must indicate in their prompt that they want the activity to take place on WhatsApp. For example, a question like “Can you call [Contact Name] on WhatsApp?” can be used to initiate a WhatsApp call. Alternatively use “Send a WhatsApp message to [Contact Name]” while sending a message.
Additionally, Google has released a Gemini plugin for Spotify, which enables users to utilise the Gemini assistant to search for and play music on the streaming service. Users can request that Gemini play particular songs, albums, artists, playlists, and more when they have the Spotify extension installed. YouTube Music offers a similar feature set.
