Gemini has been removed from Google’s main iOS search app

Google has decided to remove its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app on iOS devices, shifting its focus to the standalone Gemini app instead. This move is intended to encourage more users to download the dedicated app, positioning Gemini more competitively against other AI-powered assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, this transition could also limit Gemini’s reach, as millions of users already rely on the Google app, and not all of them may be inclined to install an additional application.

The company informed users about this change through an email stating, “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.” It advised those who wish to continue using Gemini on iOS to download the separate Gemini app from the App Store. While this app became available globally for iOS users late last year, Google had continued to offer Gemini within its primary app until now.

With the standalone Gemini app, users can interact with the AI assistant through voice conversations using Gemini Live, connect it to Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, explore topics, get AI-generated summaries, plan trips, create images, and more. The app supports text, voice, and camera-based interactions, offering a versatile AI experience.

Additionally, Google’s email reminded users that Gemini isn’t flawless and may occasionally provide incorrect responses, encouraging them to verify information. Those interested in accessing more advanced AI features can subscribe to Gemini Advanced via the Google One AI Premium plan, which is available as an in-app purchase through the iOS app.

For users who attempt to access Gemini through the main Google app, a full-screen prompt will now appear, notifying them that “Gemini now has its own app” and providing a link to download it from the App Store.

This strategy is a calculated risk for Google. While moving to a dedicated app may allow for faster feature updates and a more focused AI experience, it also risks losing some users who may not take the extra step to install a separate application.
