For the first time, India has started exporting components used in Apple products, such as AirPods and MacBooks, to manufacturing hubs in Vietnam and China, according to a report by the Economic Times on Friday. This marks a significant shift in Apple’s global supply chain strategy, positioning India as an emerging player in high-end electronics manufacturing. The move is being hailed as a crucial milestone in the diversification of Apple’s supply chain, reducing its dependence on China while strengthening India’s role in global electronics production.

As per the ET report, several key Apple suppliers in India, including Tata Electronics, Motherson Group, Aequs, and Jabil, are producing essential electronic components for Apple devices. These components are now being exported to China and Vietnam, where they will be assembled into finished Apple products. Industry experts cited in the report view this as a game-changing moment for India’s electronics sector, as it signals a shift from being a net importer to an exporter of high-value technology components. Over the last two decades, New Delhi has primarily relied on importing sub-assemblies and crucial electronic parts from China and Vietnam. This reversal in trade dynamics represents a remarkable turnaround in India’s supply chain story.

The report further highlights that analysts anticipate India is on course to achieve its ambitious $40 billion electronics export target by 2031. There is growing speculation that the Indian government may soon introduce a $3 billion Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme specifically aimed at boosting domestic component manufacturing. Such an initiative would further enhance India’s capabilities in electronics production, making it an even more attractive destination for global tech companies.

At present, Apple’s manufacturing operations in India are focused primarily on iPhones. However, sources suggest that the tech giant is planning to expand its production footprint to include a broader range of products in the near future. The ET report indicates that Apple’s ‘Made in India’ devices will eventually be shipped to China and Vietnam, further integrating India into the brand’s global supply network.
