In the USA and Canada, the BMW X5 recently commemorated its 25th anniversary with limited-edition editions. However, BMW’s local business has taken a different approach and introduced the Dark Flame Limited Edition for China rather than merely rebranding the same model. This China-only variant distinguishes the long-wheelbase X5 Li from its international siblings by adding custom exterior and interior elements.

The facelifted, long-wheelbase X5 that was unveiled in 2023 is the foundation for this China-specific Dark Flame edition. With contrasting Titan Gold highlights and a Sapphire Blue exterior, it primarily pushes towards a dramatic, dark style. These gold accents border the windows, embellish the side gills, intakes on the front bumper, and the illuminated kidney grille. The Titan Gold coating also extends to the tailboard badging.

The SUV is equipped with M-branded brake callipers and 22-inch black-finished alloy wheels. The dual exhaust pipes’ dark finish, the smoked black taillights, and the Dark Flame designs on the puddle lights are further stylish features.

Not only does the extended X5 Li appear larger, it actually is. With an enlarged wheelbase of 3,105 mm (122.2 inches) and a length of 5,060 mm (199.2 inches), this variant is comparable to BMW’s larger models, such as the X7 and XM.

nside, BMW opted for dark grey Alcantara headliner around the standard “starry sky” panoramic sunroof and black Sensafin premium soft synthetic leather upholstery for the seats. The centre console and dashboard have carbon fibre inserts, and the inside is dark with gold contrasting stitching.

Predictably high levels of equipment are included, such as a Harman Kardon audio system, a curved digital dashboard, heated and ventilated seats, and a four-zone temperature control system. Lastly, the lit side sills, the front seatbacks, and the cup holder all have the Dark Flame insignia.

Based on the xDrive40Li, the special model boasts a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged mild-hybrid engine that generates 375 horsepower (280 kW/381) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. All four wheels receive power through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. Standard equipment includes M Sport brakes, M Sport exhaust, and adaptive dual-axle air suspension.

Only 1,000 of the BMW X5 xDrive40 Li Exclusive Dark Flame Edition will be produced, and it costs a cool 830,000 yuan (about $116,500) in China. This tag puts it 30,000 yuan ($4,200) more expensive than the Night Edition and 101,000 yuan ($14,200) more expensive than the M Sport Package trim with the same engine and gearbox combination.
