With their 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal reached a historic milestone and defeated United in the league for the first time in four straight games.
William Saliba and Jurrien Timber both scored goals from set pieces, which were crucial in defeating a tenacious United defence.
In the 53rd minute, Timber headed in from a Declan Rice corner after soaring over the defence. Following a deflection from a Bukayo Saka corner, Saliba added the second.
When all competitions are taken into account, Arsenal has already defeated United four times in a row. One of those wins occurred in the Charity Shield in the late 1990s. Up until today, they had never accomplished it in the league by themselves.
In the former Division One, Manchester United defeated Arsenal four times in a row between 1951 and 1952, 1956 and 1958, and five times between 1983 and 1985.
“It’s a very special night, celebrating 100 games in this incredible stadium against an opponent with so much history.” Mikel Arteta said in celebration of the historic achievement. He praised the club for their defensive tenacity and set-piece success, which allowed them to hold United at bay the entire time.
“We need to improve in a lot of areas of our game, but we were controlling the game.” explained Ruben Amorim of United, acknowledging Arsenal’s dominance on set pieces.
