Apple continues to push boundaries in the wearables market, particularly with its highly successful AirPods and Apple Watch lines. AirPods, especially, have garnered immense popularity for the Cupertino tech giant. Recently, Apple has been focusing on incorporating health-focused innovations, as seen with the second-generation AirPods Pro, which can function as clinical-grade hearing aids. Now, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly taking health features a step further by planning to introduce heart rate monitoring in its next-generation AirPods Pro, potentially named AirPods Pro 3.

Gurman disclosed in his Power On newsletter that Apple is working on heart rate monitoring technology and may have it ready by the time the AirPods Pro 3 are available for purchase. Although the feature is still in its early stages, it promises exciting new possibilities for users. Users of AirPods might benefit from heart rate tracking without an Apple Watch thanks to this addition. While internal tests indicate that the Apple Watch offers slightly superior accuracy, the AirPods’ heart rate tracking capability isn’t far behind, making it a compelling option.

Interestingly, another wearable device rumored to include heart rate tracking is the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. Reports from MacRumors suggest that iOS 18 code points to this feature, with the Powerbeats Pro 2 potentially allowing connectivity with gym equipment like treadmills. The collected data could then sync seamlessly with the Apple Health app, enhancing fitness tracking for users.

While heart rate monitoring has become commonplace in smartwatches, even budget models, it remains a rarity in true wireless earbuds. Given Apple’s history of delivering reliable tracking features, the introduction of this functionality in AirPods Pro 3 could be a game-changer, broadening access to health monitoring tools for many users.

This development is consistent with Apple’s ongoing commitment to health innovations. The company has recently expanded its offerings with features like sleep apnea detection via the Apple Watch and is reportedly working on blood pressure monitoring for future models. These advancements, alongside the comprehensive health tracking already available on Apple devices, underscore the brand’s dedication to integrating health-focused technology into everyday life. If realized, the AirPods Pro 3’s heart rate monitoring could cement its place as a holistic, versatile wearable for a broader audience.
