Both in terms of hardware and design, it is expected to represent a significant improvement over the existing model.
As a replacement for the third-generation iPhone SE from last year, Apple is expected to release the iPhone SE 4 in 2025. A new report has revealed some of the new features and design choices that may eventually update Apple’s mid-ranger. It has long been rumored that the upcoming smartphone will have a number of improvements over its predecessor.
The iPhone SE 4 is reportedly known internally at Apple by the codename “Ghost,” and it will reportedly have a completely new design from its predecessor. The new handset is rumored to acquire a design taken from the base iPhone 14, meaning it will be taller than the outgoing model and have a notch at the top, unlike the present model, which looks dated by 2023 standards. The device is also expected to have Face ID, which has long been a feature of the top iPhones (in place of the Home button with the Touch ID sensor).
The report goes on to say that Apple is testing the iPhone SE 4 internally using iPhone 14 specifications and that the iPhone SE 4 will not simply use a modified version of the iPhone 14 chassis. According to reports, the addition of an Action button and a USB-C port (instead of a Lightning port) for charging will be the only two major changes from the iPhone 14 model. On the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the Action button took the role of the ring/silent switch, while the iPhone 15 series introduced USB-C this year.
The rear-facing camera module on the iPhone SE 4 also promises to be an important upgrade over its predecessor. Apple is rumored to provide a 48MP primary camera in the following-generation iPhone SE after using an older 12MP sensor in the current model. Demands for an improved image sensor from consumers and tech influencers over the years should finally be heard. Another first for the iPhone SE series is that the iPhone SE 4 is expected to finally replace the LCD display with an OLED one.
The report claims that Apple is testing its rumored internal 5G modem, code-named “Sinope,” using the iPhone SE 4. Since Apple just hit a contract with Qualcomm to purchase 5G modems through 2026, it is now unlikely that the device will be the first iPhone to include Apple’s own 5G modem. The iPhone SE 4 looks to be a fascinating smartphone in either case, and if the rumours are accurate, it might be just what Apple needs to compete with Android mid-range devices from Samsung, OnePlus, Nothing, and other manufacturers.
