A new feature of WhatsApp will allow users to generate their own group profile pictures using Meta AI, according to an update
WhatsApp is reportedly experimenting with a new AI-powered profile picture generation feature, allowing users to create unique and personalized group icons with ease. According to a report from WABetaInfo, this innovative tool is currently in its beta testing phase and has been rolled out to a limited number of users. The idea behind this feature is to provide a convenient solution for users who may not have an appropriate image to set as their group profile picture, enabling Meta’s AI to generate one based on their input.
A shared screenshot by WABetaInfo reveals that some beta testers have already gained access to this new capability. However, WhatsApp appears to have restricted the feature to group icons only, meaning users cannot yet generate AI-crafted profile images for their personal accounts. Instead, they can provide a textual description of their desired image, and the AI will interpret the prompt to create a visually fitting profile picture for the group. The system is expected to cater to various themes, offering options such as futuristic, abstract, fantasy, or even professional aesthetics to match the group’s purpose, interests, or mood.
Interestingly, the report also mentions that this AI-driven profile photo feature has begun appearing in the stable version of WhatsApp on Android, even for users who are not actively part of the beta testing program. This suggests that the messaging giant may be gearing up for a broader rollout soon, making the tool available to a larger audience. However, there is no official confirmation yet regarding its availability for iOS users.
Beyond AI-generated profile pictures, WhatsApp has also been introducing other AI-powered enhancements. Just last week, the messaging platform launched its voice message transcription feature in India. This functionality uses on-device processing to automatically convert received voice messages into readable text transcripts. While this is a significant step towards accessibility and convenience, Hindi, a widely spoken language in India, is not yet supported as a transcription option. Despite this, the feature still manages to generate text for voice notes recorded in Hindi, albeit without official language recognition.
