Apple is enhancing its Voice Memos app in iOS 18.2 with a new feature that allows iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max users to record vocal tracks over existing instrumental recordings. Unlike traditional setups that require headphones, this update enables simultaneous recording of vocals and instruments using the iPhone’s built-in speaker and microphones, simplifying the process for musicians and creators.

The feature, initially teased during Apple’s September event, serves as a modern replacement for the Music Memos app, which was discontinued in 2021, leaving many musicians seeking alternatives in third-party apps like Tape It. Leveraging the A18 Pro chip and advanced machine learning capabilities, Voice Memos now supports the creation of two distinct audio tracks: one for instrumental backing and another for vocals. Users can either record live instrumentals or import pre-existing instrumental mixes directly into the app, layering vocals seamlessly.

These “Layered Recordings” are designed for greater flexibility, as they sync across devices via Voice Memos on Mac and can be easily imported into professional software like Logic Pro. This integration streamlines the transition from casual recording to advanced production, allowing musicians to refine their work with professional-grade tools. The functionality is showcased in a new holiday track by Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce, and producer Greg Wells titled Maybe This Christmas, with a behind-the-scenes video highlighting how the app was utilized for individual vocal recordings on an iPhone 16 Pro.

Only iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models running iOS 18.2 can use the upgraded Voice Memos app. Compatibility extends to Logic Pro for Mac 11.1 with macOS Sequoia 15.2 and Logic Pro for iPad 2.1 with iPadOS 18.2, enabling seamless sharing and editing. Additionally, iOS 18’s previous updates introduced transcription capabilities, allowing users to view audio transcriptions in real-time or post-recording, further enhancing the app’s utility for creators.
