Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared insights about the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro series and the future trajectory of optical zoom improvements in Apple’s flagship phones up to 2027’s iPhone 19 Pro. At present, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max includes a tetraprism lens, significantly enhancing its optical zoom capabilities. According to earlier reports, the next iPhone 16 Pro will adopt this advanced camera system.
Kuo indicates that the addition of the tetraprism lens is the only notable change for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Both models will incorporate the same tetraprism lens introduced with the 2023 iPhone 15 Pro Max.
However, in a recent blog post, Kuo mentions that more substantial enhancements are slated for the 2025 iPhone 17 Pro Max. This model will feature an advanced tetraprism lens designed to boost both zoom functionality and image quality. The existing tetraprism lens, which includes a 1/3.1″ 12MP Contact Image Sensor (CIS), will be upgraded to a 1/2.6″ 48MP CIS in the top-tier iPhone of 2025.
It’s uncertain if the upgraded tetraprism lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max or if it will also be available in the iPhone 17 Pro. Regardless, Kuo states that the new tetraprism camera will definitely be part of the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Looking ahead to 2027’s iPhone 19 Pro Max, Kuo forecasts another significant enhancement to the tetraprism lens. While he hasn’t provided specific details, he suggests this upgrade will be more substantial than previous improvements. The iPhone 19 Pro Max is expected to offer even better optical zoom, though Apple might opt for a new name if they incorporate smaller and more numerous prisms.
