WASHINGTON —

Clemson’s National Championship team will be traveling to the White House on Monday, as indicated by President Donald Trump.

On Friday night, Trump tweeted he will meet the team on Monday Jan. 14.

Sen. Lindsey Graham’s Office confirmed the team’s plans.

Clemson University released an announcement saying:

“Clemson University’s football team, athletic department and university administration are looking forward to visiting the White House on Monday evening.

“The university is appreciative of the opportunity to participate in this time-honored White House tradition for the second time in three years as we celebrate Clemson’s commitment to excellence on and off the playing field, and our football team’s record-setting 2018 football season.”

The Clemson Tigers defeated No. 1 Alabama by four touchdowns, 44-16, on Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship for the second time in three years.

For a few players on the current year’s championship team, the trip to the White House will be their second one, including wide receiver Hunter Renfrow and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins.

The Tigers were at the White House in June 2017 after they won the NCAA championship in January 2017 out in a 35-31 victory over Alabama.

After that success, the president tweeted: “The 2016 Clemson Tigers gave America an incredible game that will go down in the record books as one of the hardest fought and most exciting victories ever. They never, ever gave up – and it paid off!”
