A new theft protection service from Google for Samsung and Pixel phones has been introduced called Identity Check
Google has introduced a new feature called Identity Check, designed to enhance the security of sensitive information stored on smartphones. This feature is currently available on devices running Android 15 and provides an additional layer of protection by requiring biometric verification to access sensitive data. Once enabled, users will need to provide their biometrics, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition, before gaining access to crucial information.
With the rise in smartphone theft, the need for robust security features has never been greater. Modern smartphones often hold vast amounts of personal and sensitive data, making them attractive targets for thieves. In response, Google has developed and officially launched Identity Check as part of its security measures for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices running Android 15. This feature aims to safeguard users’ digital accounts and private information, offering added peace of mind.
The Identity Check feature operates as a theft-protection mechanism, activating automatically when a device is detected outside the user’s designated Trusted places. These are locations pre-set by the user, such as home or work, where the phone remains unlocked under normal circumstances. Once outside these zones, Android will require biometric authentication to access sensitive areas, such as Google account settings and other critical pages. This added layer ensures that, in the event of theft, a thief cannot bypass security simply by entering the device’s PIN or password. In fact, these credentials won’t even appear on the screen unless biometric verification is provided.
Users can configure trusted locations through the Theft Protection settings menu, giving them control over where and when the Identity Check activates. This new feature is part of a larger toolkit, which includes safeguards like Theft Detection Lock. This specific tool can automatically secure the device if it senses an attempted theft, such as someone forcefully grabbing it from the user’s hand.
