Following an incredible year in which he won the Olympic gold medal, Keely Hodgkinson has been named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

In the popular vote, the 800-meter runner defeated England cricketer Joe Root and darts sensation Luke Littler to take second and third place, respectively.

Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid, Olympic and international triathlon champion Alex Yee, and paracyclist Dame Sarah Storey were also nominated.

After winning silver in Tokyo in 2021, Hodgkinson, 22, went on to win gold in Paris.

In front of a large crowd in London, she also managed to hold onto her European championship and set her personal British record in the sixth fastest time ever.

Following Emma Raducanu, Beth Mead, and Mary Earps, Hodgkinson is the fourth consecutive woman to receive the esteemed honour.

They admitted to being “in a bit of shock” when he accepted the trophy on BBC One.

“This year has been incredible and I achieved everything that I set out to do on the outdoor track,” she explained.

“I hope you loved watching Paris and I wish you all a wonderful evening.”

Jenny Meadows and Trevor Painter, her coaches, split the coach of the year honour.

Sir Bradley Wiggins, another cycling legend, presented Sir Mark Cavendish with a lifetime achievement award during the Salford ceremony.

After achieving the record for the most Tour de France stage victories in July, the “Manx missile” retired in 2017.

After winning ten titles this year, Luke Littler, who rose to stardom at the darts world championships as a 16-year-old last year, took home the young sports personality medal despite finishing second for the main award.
