Amazon’s Eero is taking Wi-Fi beyond the walls of your home with the new Eero Outdoor 7, a weatherproof access point designed to extend coverage to outdoor areas like backyards, garages, and even outbuildings. This dual-band Wi-Fi 7 device, operating on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, integrates seamlessly with existing Eero mesh networks, offering speeds of up to 2.1 Gbps. It can cover an impressive 15,000 square feet outdoors, ensuring a steady connection for smartphones, outdoor speakers, and other devices.

One of the standout features is the ability to create a point-to-point link between two Eero Outdoor 7 units, allowing you to extend Wi-Fi over longer distances. According to Eero’s CEO, Nick Weaver, with the right setup, it can deliver speeds in the hundreds of megabits per second at nearly half a mile away—perfect for those with home offices in the garden, or for cafés and bars with outdoor spaces.

Built to endure tough weather, the Eero Outdoor 7 is designed to operate in extreme conditions, from temperatures as low as -40°F to as high as 130°F, and can withstand winds up to 100 mph. It holds an IP66 rating, meaning it’s resistant to rain and snow. The device also features a Gore-Tex vent for condensation management and a grounding screw to protect against lightning strikes.

Installation is straightforward, with instructions for mounting on various surfaces like stucco, vinyl, wood, or fiber cement. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing a single Ethernet cable to supply both internet and power through its 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, though it requires Eero’s $400 PoE Gateway for this. For those who prefer a wireless connection, an outdoor power adapter is available for an extra $50, which enables the device to connect wirelessly to the mesh, albeit with a slight reduction in bandwidth.

Notably, the Eero Outdoor 7 doesn’t support the 6 GHz band, which is often highlighted as a key feature of Wi-Fi 7, due to the range limitations of that frequency. However, it does support Thread, Zigbee, and Matter, making it ideal for smart home devices like security cameras and robot lawn mowers. Compared to cheaper outdoor routers like TP-Link’s Deco X50, its smart-home compatibility might justify the higher price point.

The Eero Outdoor 7 is priced at $350, with availability starting November 13. A bundle including a 30-watt PoE and power adapter will cost $400, providing around 18 feet of cabling. Additionally, two-pack bundles and bundles with other Eero systems like the Max 7 will be available. The Eero Outdoor 7 also comes with a three-year warranty.
