Sony has rolled out firmware updates for its premium wireless audio products—the WF-1000XM5 earbuds and WH-1000XM5 headphones—bringing several new features, including enhanced compatibility with Google’s Find My Device network. This update also integrates functionalities that were introduced with the company’s recent LinkBuds Speaker, further expanding the versatility of Sony’s wireless devices.
One of the most notable additions is support for the Auto Switch feature, which was first launched with the new LinkBuds earbuds and speaker lineup. This functionality allows the speaker to seamlessly take over playback from wireless headphones when the user stops using them. Currently, only five models in Sony’s wireless headphone range, including the WF-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM5, are compatible with Auto Switch, but users will need to install the new firmware to access this feature.
The update also includes enhancements for Google’s Find My Device network, potentially making it easier to locate the headphones or earbuds if they go missing while away from home. After installing the firmware, customers can follow their audio equipment over Google’s network; however, Sony has indicated that this feature is limited to times when they have a “dedicated Classic Audio connection.” While Sony hasn’t clarified all the details, this may indicate that the headphones or earbuds need to be powered on and connected to an Android device for real-time tracking or that Find My Device won’t work in low-latency Bluetooth modes. If the devices aren’t actively connected or powered on, users may only have access to their last known location.
In addition to these features, the version 2.3.1 update for the WH-1000XM5 headphones also includes security enhancements, boosting user protection during use. Meanwhile, the version 4.0.2 update for the WF-1000XM5 earbuds introduces Google Fast Pair through LE Audio priority connection. This addition is designed to make the pairing process with Android devices more efficient and streamlined, reducing the time it takes to connect the earbuds.
These updates, alongside Sony’s recently launched Sound Connect app, reflect the company’s continued efforts to enhance user experiences with improved connectivity, security, and convenience across its wireless audio devices. By staying ahead in terms of both innovation and integration with platforms like Google’s, Sony is making it easier for users to enjoy their devices and locate them if misplaced.
