Kamindu Mendis of Sri Lanka is now the quickest hitter in the country to reach 1,000 Test runs.
Mendis reached the milestone on Friday in Galle, when he hit an unbeaten eighteen two in Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 602/5d against New Zealand.
Mendis helped his team to a massive total during his knock by forming two stands of more than a century and one stand of more than fifty.
An average of 91.27 with the bat
Mendis was still undefeated after 182 balls out of 250. He hit four sixes and sixteen fours.
In a remarkable partnership of 200* runs for the sixth wicket, he was unbeaten on 106 with Kusal Mendis.
For Sri Lanka, Mendis has already scored more over 1,000 runs in the longest format. At 91.27, he has 1,004 runs under his belt.
He hit a five-century record (50s: 4).
Don Bradman’s record equalled by Kamindu Mendis
Mendis needed 13 innings to achieve the 1,000-run mark, according to ESPNcricinfo. He broke Roy Dias’ record (23 innings) and became the fastest batsman from Sri Lanka to reach the milestone.
The record stands at twelve innings apiece for Herbert Sutcliffe of England and Everton Weekes of the West Indies.
Mendis tied Sir Don Bradman, who also needed 13 innings to reach the 1,000-run mark.
Fastest Asian batter to five Test hundreds
Mendis became the fastest Asian batsman to five Test hundreds after scoring 114 and 13 in the opening match against New Zealand.
He reached Fawad Alam of Pakistan’s record, which stood at 22 innings.
As of right present, Mendis is tied for fourth place among all batters to have scored five Test hundreds.
Mendis’ fifth Test century (13 innings) pulled him level with George Headley and Don Bradman.
