Safari’s newest feature, Distraction Control, gives users the ability to eliminate distracting elements from websites, akin to the functionality provided by Arc Browser’s Boosts, which were introduced last year. Boosts enable users to remove specific site features and tailor the site’s appearance to their liking. Apple is now launching an early version of Distraction Control through the latest developer betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

To make use of the Distraction Control tool, users can locate it in the Page Menu within the Smart Search field. By selecting any distracting element on the website they wish to remove, Safari will remember this preference for future visits to the same site. However, it’s important to note that this preference does not synchronize across different devices, necessitating users to hide the same elements on each device individually.

For users who want to reveal any previously hidden elements, they can click on the blue Hide icon in the search field and select “Show hidden items” to make those elements visible again.

It is essential to highlight that Distraction Control will not remove advertisements or sections containing frequently changing content. There is some uncertainty about whether the tool can remove dynamic sections like “Who to follow” or “Explore” on X, where the location is static but the content frequently changes. In previous tests, Arc Browser’s Boost tool was successful in removing such sections.

In addition to Distraction Control, iOS 18 introduces a redesigned reader mode that enhances listening and font control options, making reading on Safari a more pleasant experience. Another new feature, Highlights, extracts important information from a page, offering quick links for directions, call information, and summaries of TV show reviews mentioned on the page.

These updates signify considerable advancements in user experience, providing a more customized and less distracting browsing experience on Safari. With the addition of Distraction Control, users can focus more on the content that matters to them without being sidetracked by unnecessary elements on the web pages they visit.

By rolling out these features, Apple aims to enhance the overall usability of Safari, making it a more efficient and enjoyable tool for browsing. These improvements not only cater to individual user preferences but also streamline the navigation process, thereby setting a new standard for web browsers. The integration of such thoughtful features reflects Apple’s commitment to innovation and user satisfaction, ensuring that Safari remains a top choice for both casual and professional users.
