This advancement will be standard across all variants: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the newly introduced Pixel 9 Pro XL. In contrast, the Pixel Fold 2 is expected to integrate a capacitive fingerprint sensor within its home button.
What sets the Pixel 9 series apart is its implementation of the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, similar to the one found in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, including the Ultra model. Since the introduction of the Pixel 6 series, Google has relied on Goodix’s optical fingerprint sensors, which, while effective for security purposes, have been critiqued for their slower responsiveness and susceptibility to inaccuracies, particularly in humid conditions. Furthermore, optical sensors have often struggled in low-light environments, necessitating adequate lighting for optimal functionality.
The shift to ultrasonic technology signifies a significant enhancement for the Pixel 9 series, promising improvements in both security and user experience. Alongside this technological leap, leaks have indicated the introduction of a new Pink color variant for the devices, as demonstrated in recent hands-on previews.
